Ceiling & Grid

Back to DIY FAQ's

Why do I have to do a room layout? Can't I just start in one corner and work out?
Most walls are neither straight, nor square. It is necessary to lay out the Ceiling pattern before starting to make sure you don't end up with small and odd-shaped tiles. This also ensures full usage of material.

Can I rest my light fixtures on the back of the tile?
No, Ceiling tiles will not support the weight of light fixtures. Fixture support brackets may be purchased at most lighting stores or departments. Alternately, a piece of lumber resting across the main tees may be used.

What is Fire-rated ceiling and why do I need one?
Fire rated ceilings are part of a fire barrier between floors. These are generally required in multi-use or multi-tenant structures. These ceilings require special grid systems and special tiles and must be installed in a specific manner. Always consult the local authority having jurisdiction before starting such a project.

I have a 12' room. Can I install the 12' main tees by just cutting off the end tabs?
No. Always start with a cut end. Main tees are punched 3" from each end and 6" on centre through the length. This is to provide a continuous 6" spacing after tees are spliced. By cutting approx. 27" from the end of the first main tee, you will preserve a variable piece and can adjust for variances in room dimensions, which almost always occur.

I have a very low basement and don't want to drop the ceiling as much as the instructions call for. Is there a way to keep it tighter to the joists above?
Yes. By leaving out every second cross tee, you can install the tiles and let them sit on top of the grid temporarily. Then install the missing tees and slide the panels back into place.

I want to keep the noise from the basement from reaching upstairs. What is the best tile to use?
CGC tiles are displayed with "GOOD", "BETTER", "BEST" sound blocking. Additionally, our brochure lists the "CAC" values of each product. The higher the CAC, the more sound blocking capabilities it has. In addition, rock wool insulation can be friction-fix between the joists for better sound control.

How far apart should the main tees be spaced?
The general rule is to space main tees 4' apart and the 4' cross tees locked in at 2' spacing perpendicular to the main.

What is the required distance between hanger wires?
Hanger wire should be spaced no further that 4' apart and secured to the main tee with 3 or 4 twist. It is also recommended that a hanger be placed in the first hanger hole where the main tees are joined.

What is the minimum depth for hanging a new ceiling?
A minimum clearance of 3" for mineral fiber panels is the general rule. If fiberglass panels are used, the minimum height can be reduced to approximately 1 ½".

How to do a standard room layout?
Find center line of the room and mark 2' on either side of center line, this will give the 4' spacing required for the main tee runs. Review the layout and try to ensure the borders are balanced and are not more that a half panel in width, this will allow for maximum material usage.
