SHEETROCK® Brand HUMITEK™ Gypsum Panels
Are these new panels an
extension of the SHEETROCK® Brand Gypsum Panels, Water Resistant,
product family?
No. SHEETROCK® Brand HUMITEK™ Gypsum Panels are a new family of
paper faced gypsum panels offered by USG. They are based on
standard SHEETROCK® Brand Gypsum Panels with added features of
moisture and mold resistance.
Shouldn't all gypsum panels
stay dry? Does this mean we are changing our position on delivery,
storage and handling?
Yes, all gypsum panels, regardless of paper, glass or other facing
should be delivered, stored, installed and maintained in a dry
environment. All of our current storage and handling
recommendations for SHEETROCK® Brand Gypsum Panels apply to these
new products. We will continue to offer products that incorporate
enhanced performance attributes, but the key to minimizing moisture
problems is minimizing moisture exposure throughout the
construction cycle.
Where do we recommend
SHEETROCK® Brand HUMITEK™ Gypsum Panels be applied?
The panels are for use in interior areas where resistance to mold
is desired. They offer additional resistance to moisture and mold
when compared to SHEETROCK® Brand Gypsum Panels. They are subject
to identical delivery, storage, handling and application
recommendations as SHEETROCK® Brand Gypsum Panels.
Areas that may be subject to intermittent moisture before,
during and after construction will be targeted for these products.
These areas may include:
Face layers of shaft wall and area separation wall
assemblies
Interior faces of exterior walls
Basements
Garages
Interior areas around windows, doors or other penetrations
Bathrooms (not including the tub and shower area)
Where should SHEETROCK®
Brand Gypsum Panels, Water-Resistant be used?
SHEETROCK® Brand Gypsum Panels, WR are for interior areas where
incidental moisture is a concern, but where added mold resistance
is not a requirement.
What products can be used in
high moisture areas such as tub/shower surrounds, gang showers, or
other areas?
DUROCK® Brand Cement Board is the best product for these areas. It
is extremely moisture durable and offers mold resistance. The Tile
Council of America does not recommend the use of paper faced gypsum
substrates in these areas. CGC supports this recommendation
therefore we do not recommend that SHEETROCK® Brand Gypsum Panels,
Water-Resistant or SHEETROCK® Brand HUMITEK™ Gypsum Panels be used
in these areas.
What are our finishing
recommendations for these new products?
SHEETROCK® Brand HUMITEK™ Gypsum Panels may be finished like
regular gypsum panels however it is recommended that setting type
compounds such as SHEETROCK® Durabond Joint Compound, SHEETROCK®
Brand Paper Tape, SHEETROCK® First Coat, and SHEETROCK® Brand
Paper-Faced Metal Bead and Trim for areas requiring a Level 4
finish or less. SHEETROCK® Brand Primer-Surfacer, Tuff Hide for
areas requiring a Level 5 finish.
Can veneer plaster be applied
to these products?
No. GRANDPRIX® Brand Gypsum Base is still the substrate for CGC
Veneer Plaster products.
