Recycled Content
Today's building industry focuses on conservation, recycling and
long-term performance in a comprehensive strategy known as
sustainable design. This practice involves the careful selection of
building materials, construction methods and design details to
create structures that consume fewer natural resources to build,
maintain and remain viable in the future. The following CGC
products play an important role in our larger commitment to
sustainable building practices.
Gypsum Products
CGC's wallboard plant in Hagersville, Ontario has been
reclaiming waste gypsum board for recycling for more than 25 years.
The paper used in the company's gypsum wallboard is made with 100%
recycled paper. The Montreal and Hagersville wallboard plants use
synthetic gypsum in their wallboard manufacturing. The synthetic
gypsum is obtained as a by-product of flue gas desulfurization and
other industrial processes. This practice provides the
environmental benefit of reducing acid rain; the use of synthetic
gypsum in wallboard manufacturing also eliminates the need for its
disposal in landfills.
Steel Suspension Systems
Steel Suspension Systems are manufactured by CGC in Oakville,
Ontario, from steel with a 25% recycled content. Scrap
generated in manufacture is all re-cycled, and all products that
have completed their life cycle may be recycled locally.
Mineral Fibre Ceilings
CGC offers ceiling products for commercial, institutional, and
residential applications. Mineral fibre acoustical ceiling panels
and tiles are composed of slag wool (a by-product of steel
manufacturing), cellulose fibres (recycled newspapers and other
materials), perlite, and cornstarch, a renewable resource. These
products are available in a variety of sizes, edges, textures,
patterns, colours, and finishes.
The AURATONE® and ACOUSTONE® brands contain over 46%
post-consumer and post-industrial recycled content. ECLIPSE™, MARS™
, MILLENNIA®, and ORION™, contain approximately 82% post-industrial
recycled material. Products are manufactured at various facilities
in the U.S.
CGC will arrange for recycling of USG manufactured product that
is removed from qualified projects (Other manufacturers' products
may be accepted, based on analysis of formulation). The client is
responsible for handling costs at site; CGC will pay freight costs
to the manufacturing facility.
