Our History

100+ Years of Innovation

From the very beginning in 1907, CGC has pursued a simple yet powerful mission: To create building products that improve the world around us. Over the decades, CGC has consistently pushed the boundaries of building science, developing a wide range of innovative products that have shaped the construction industry. From latex paint and mineral fiber ceiling tiles to shaft wall elevator systems and Durock® and Sheetrock® panels, our inventions have enhanced building efficiency, performance and aesthetics. Our commitment to quality and innovation has made us a trusted partner for builders and architects worldwide.

An Industry Leader is Born

1902: The United States Gypsum Company is founded after 30 independent gypsum companies merge, consolidating their resources and expertise.
1907: CGC is founded as the Canadian Gypsum Company in Nova Scotia, Canada. CGC mainly focused on quarrying and exporting gypsum rock to the United States.

Revolutionary Product Changes the Industry

1917: Our Invention of Sheetrock® Brand Gypsum Panels transformed the industry as a faster, more cost-effective way to create smooth, flat, fire-resistant walls and ceilings.
1920s: CGC joins USG, benefiting from this expanded network of research and development facilities while increasing Canadian’s access to innovative products and expertise.

Expansion and Diversification

1950s: The development of Durock® Cement Board, a strong, moisture-resistant panel for use in kitchens and bathrooms fills a critical role in building and construction.
1970: Sheetrock® Panels use 100% recycled paper.

Leading with Innovation

1986: CGC acquires the Donn® Corporation, becoming the only company to offer complete pre-designed and fully integrated ceiling systems
1990s: Introduction of Fiberock® Band Panels, which are resistant to moisture and mold. By 1995, Fiberock® Panels are made from 95% recycled materials.
2010s: CGC unveils Sheetrock® Brand Ultralight panels which are stronger and up to 30% lighter than traditional drywall. The CGC Ensemble™ Acoustical Drywall Ceiling System is introduced, combining the smooth, monolithic appearance of drywall with the acoustical performance of suspended ceiling systems.

Building for a Sustainable Tomorrow

2015: Introduction of Sheetrock® Brand Ultralight Type X panels - the first and lightest Type X (fire-rated) gypsum panel in Canada.
2019: The Knauf Group acquires USG Corporation. This acquisition stands as a major milestone in Knauf ‘s history, propelling the company to significantly expand their presence in the North American market.
2022: CGC announces its 2030 Sustainability Goals outlining a commitment to enhance sustainability across its operations, products, and communities, focused on reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, increasing recycled materials, and promoting sustainable practices throughout the supply chain.

Supporting Canada’s Housing Future

2023: CGC announces $104 million investment to re-launch a state-of- the-art gypsum quarry in Nova Scotia.
2024: CGC’s head office moves to join the historic Oakville Plant, an operational ceilings grid plant since 1966, after 17,000 square feet of renovations.
2024: The groundbreaking of the plant in Wheatland, Alberta marks the start of the work on CGC’s most sustainable plant to date.
2025: CGC is certified as a Great Place to Work®
2025: CGC introduces Sheetrock® Brand Ultralight PRO — our most durable and lightweight ½-inch drywall, engineered for strength and sustainability.
2025: CGC acquires Imperial Building Products Ltd. (IBP), a Canadian manufacturer of quality steel stud, track, drywall trims and structural solutions to offer a broader, more integrated building materials portfolio to Canadians.
