The Wake Tech Education and Innovation Center project came to fruition through a combination of strong collaboration early in the design phase and robust technical support. The center would serve as the gateway to the new campus of Wake Technical Community College, and a warm and welcoming design was necessary to provide an accessible and inclusive experience for students.USG was brought in early in the design phase by architect BSA Life Structures to find a ceiling solution that could reflect the cultural and artistic importance of the center. USG Ceilings Plus® Barz® became the system of choice throughout the interior of the center, and to ensure the original design vision stayed intact, USG’s team of architectural representatives worked with the architect on this project for over a year and a half, offeringguidance on weight requirements per the code of the project and laying out scenarios for multiple design intents with respect to budgeting.USG also coordinated directly with the MEP team on the project to ensure adequate airflow above the ceiling system, and utilized the expertise of their in-house acoustician to determine the acoustical requirements for the entire scope of work, such as sizing the linear system to achieve acoustical requirements and offering guidance on which acoustical material was most appropriate for the project. During installation, USG’s contractor specialty representatives were onsite to oversee progress, devoting an entire day to work with installing contractor Northedge to fine tune the system and offer technical assistance at a crucial moment during installation.A walk through of this space showcases a true example of the USG’s holistic approach to projects, achieving the design vision while balancing economic and aesthetic demand. USG implemented deep product and acoustical expertise throughout the project in dedication to being a true partner in the process. This level of coordination and attention to detail translated to a smooth installation, delivering a welcoming environment that fosters community and intentional student engagement.
