120+ Years of Innovation

From the very beginning, USG has pursued a simple yet powerful mission: To create building products that improve the world around us. Our story began in 1902 when a group of gypsum companies united to form the United States Gypsum Company, laying the foundation for a legacy of innovation and industry leadership.Over the decades, USG has consistently pushed the boundaries of building science, developing a wide range of innovative products that have shaped the construction industry. From latex paint and mineral fiber ceiling tiles to shaft wall elevator systems and Durock® and Sheetrock® panels, our inventions have enhanced building efficiency, performance, and aesthetics. Our commitment to quality and innovation has made us a trusted partner for builders and architects worldwide.

History

  • 1902: The United States Gypsum Company (USG) is founded after 30 independent gypsum companies merge, consolidating their resources and expertise.
  • 1909: The Sackett Plaster Board Company, along with its multi-layer plaster and paper board, is acquired.

Revolutionary Product Changes the Industry

  • 1917: The Sheetrock® Brand Gypsum Panel is a breakthrough in the industry, transforming construction with a faster, cost-effective way to create smooth, flat, fire-resistant walls and ceilings. That same year, USG introduces its first ceiling product—a pressed metal panel.
  • 1920's: USG develops a new market in Canada with the subsidiary Canadian Gypsum Company (CGC) expanding their North American presence.
  • 1933-34: Sheetrock® panels are used to construct a large portion of the Chicago World's Fair, giving rise to Sheetrock's first major advertising campaign.

Expansion and Diversification

  • 1940s: USG products are in high demand with the proliferation of tract housing development following WWII.
  • 1950s: Recognizing it's critical role, USG diversifies into cement with the development of Durock® Cement Board, a strong, moisture-resistant panel ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.
  • 1955: USG expands into Mexico, setting up manufacturing facilities and distribution networks to meet demand related to industrial growth and urbanization.
  • 1960s: USG expands operations in the Caribbean, establishing a presence in Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

Adapting to Change

  • 1970's: USG focuses on the booming commercial building industry with gypsum cavity shaft wall systems. They also create L&W Supply Corporation, expanding into distribution.
  • 1980's: USG acquires Donn® Incorporated, positioning USG Interiors as the only company to offer complete pre-designed and fully integrated ceiling systems.
  • 1990's: A new headquarters building and showroom are opened in Chicago. USG develops a new gypsum/cellulose product family, Fiberock® Brand Panels.

Leading with Innovation

  • 2007: The Fiberock® product family is expanded to include Aqua-Tough™ interior panels and underlayment. USG introduces Sheetrock® Brand Mold Tough® Panels, addressing and improving indoor air quality.
  • 2010's: USG unveils Sheetrock® Brand UltraLight panels—stronger and up to 30% lighter than traditional drywall. The USG Ensemble™ Acoustical Drywall Ceiling System is introduced, combining the smooth, monolithic appearance of drywall with the acoustical performance of suspended ceiling systems. Sheetrock® Brand EcoSmart panels, the first drywall panels specifiable for sustainability programs, is introduced. And USG Structural Panels are launched, increasing energy efficiency and cutting construction time and costs.
  • 2019: The Knauf Group acquires USG Corporation. This acquisition stands as a major milestone in Knauf ‘s history, propelling the company to significantly expand their presence in the North American market.

Building a Sustainable Future

  • 2020's: USG announces its 2030 Sustainability Goals outlining a commitment to enhance sustainability across its operations, products, and communities, focused on reducing carbon emissions, improving energy efficiency, increasing recycled materials, and promoting sustainable practices throughout the supply chain. USG launches USG Mars™ and Juno™ High-NRC Panels 95/30.  
  • 2025: USG is certified as a Great Place to Work® in the U.S., Canada, and Mexico. USG  introduces Sheetrock® Brand UltraLight Tough Panels (ULT™) in the U.S. and CGC Sheetrock® UltraLight Pro Panels in Canada.
