CGC in Little Narrows, Nova Scotia — Revitalizing a Generational Resource
A New Chapter for Little Narrows
CGC is revitalizing the historic Little Narrows Gypsum Quarry with a $104 million modernization project — part of our broader $325 million commitment to strengthen Canadian manufacturing. Building on a legacy of operations dating back to 1954, we are constructing critical infrastructure, introducing advanced technology, and supporting long‑term economic growth as a committed neighbour and partner.CGC Little Narrows will provide long-term supply predictability for builders in Canada and across North America, while setting a new standard for responsible, community‑driven mining.
Powering Canada’s Housing and Infrastructure
Gypsum is a natural mineral essential to building Canada, used in the construction of hospitals, housing and community spaces. CGC is one of the few companies that operates from the mine face to the finished product, ensuring a stable domestic supply for builders across North America.
A Coastal Mine Built for the Next Generation
Situated on the Bras d’Or Lake, CGC Little Narrows is becoming one of Canada’s most modern industrial mineral operations — shaped by technological innovation and meaningful partnership with the community of Cape Breton.Key upgrades include:
A new 600 foot dock capable of receiving ocean‑going vessels the length of a football field
Up to 2 million tonnes of gypsum shipped annually
A next generation ship loader with real time quality sensors
Simulation driven mine planning and digital modeling
Progressive reclamation integrated into every stage
"There's going to be a lot of money spent here, every year, for years to come… supporting jobs right across the province."
Allan MacMaster, Former Nova Scotia Minister of Finance
Environmental Stewardship, In Partnership
CGC is working closely with First Nations communities, environmental experts, and local partners to ensure the revitalization reflects shared priorities and long-term stewardship.CGC recognizes the Mi’kmaq of Nova Scotia, in particular the Mi’kmaq communities of Unama’kik, as rights holders whose knowledge and insights help guide the future of CGC Little Narrows. We are committed to respecting First Nations and Treaty rights, creating opportunities for economic and social benefit, incorporating Indigenous knowledge into environmental planning, and maintaining open, ongoing dialogue. This partnership is essential to building a mine that supports the next generation.
Our approach includes:
Progressive Reclamation
By restoring land as mining advances, rather than waiting until operations are complete, we’re supporting faster ecological recovery, responsible land use, and long-term community benefit. Our digital first strategy is one way we ensure that each phase of mining is integrated with progressive reclamation. We’re preserving healthy topsoil and vegetation as we develop the site, and once complete, we’ll return it. First Nations partners provide insight into native species and planting.
Ghost Gear Retrieval
Abandoned lobster traps, known as ghost gear, continue catching and killing marine life long after they’re lost, creating an ongoing cycle of “ghost fishing” that harms lobster populations, fish, and other species. Around Cape Breton, CGC has been working with local partners to retrieve this debris, removing 85 traps, 1,900 metres of rope, and 5,100 lbs of material as of February 2026, and safely freeing 74 live lobsters, fish, and crabs in the process.
Environmental Offsetting
Vital consultations throughout the process ensure our offsetting efforts protect local waterways and support ecosystem restoration.
Dredging involves carefully removing mud and silt from the lake bottom in the channel and dock areas. In response, our habitat restoration efforts include clearing blocked streams so fish can return to vital spawning grounds.
Local environmental subcommittee
CGC participates in a community-facing environmental subcommittee to maintain transparency and shared decision-making.Little Narrows is designed to be as defined by its environmental restoration as by its industrial output. Our 2030 Sustainability Goals →
CGC is growing, and we’re building a skilled team to support the revitalized Little Narrows operation. Our work is grounded in safety, innovation, and strong community partnerships — and we’re building a local team that reflects those values.
