A bold expansion to Mesa City Hall in Mesa, AZ aimed to provide the town with a modernized government facility that emphasized transparency within the community. Adaptive Architects, Inc and DLR Group designed the space with large windows and open architecture, utilizing design elements inspired by desert tones and the surrounding mountain range. In order to achieve this design vision, the updated public spaces would require a ceiling system that was visually impactful as it was acoustically
effective.
Faced with a fast-tracked construction schedule, coordination of approvals, and managing limited space on the jobsite, Western Acoustics, working with general contractor Okland Construction, managed the ceiling installation and scheduling but knew they would need a manufacturer that went beyond just a materials supplier. USG was uniquely positioned to meet the challenge with a proven track record of
technical collaboration in complex environments. USG’s ability to expedite approvals and engage in hands-on problem solving proved essential to the project schedule.
This project featured a range of USG ceilings and wall solutions, like Ceilings Plus® Barz® in conference spaces, Mars™ Acoustical Panels in office spaces, and Ensemble™ Acoustical Drywall (installed by Pete King Construction) in transitional spaces like corridors and hallways. The council chambers utilized Illusions® in a custom metallic color, and a warmer Sarante® wood tone in the public spaces through an installation of Planx™ Linear Panel Wall System. In addition to the custom features of space, an image of the nearby Red Mountain was rendered in the parametric, edge-to-edge perforations of Partí™ on
Wallforms™ Metal Panel Wall System in a warm walnut finish.
When unforeseen challenges arose, such as hardware compatibility issues with torsion spring panels or fitting ceiling trim in tight spaces near the sprinkler system, USG offered real-time technical support, coordinating with the installers to find field-ready solutions that minimized delays. Beyond product delivery, USG’s proactive, holistic approach to service helped simplify installation while maintaining the high design and performance required of this civic space. The resulting ceiling and wall systems achieved
the design vision while supporting acoustic goals, tight budget parameters, and a compressed construction schedule.
Through cross-sector collaboration and responsive support, USG helped create a space that reflects Mesa’s values of community and openness, delivering an environment that signals a long-term investment in community access and civic transparency.
